COVID-19 and the global response to the pandemic have made it significantly more challenging to end world hunger and malnutrition by 2030.

Well before the pandemic, billions of people could not afford a healthy diet, child malnutrition was unacceptably high and adult obesity was on the rise in many countries.

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2021 (SOFI 2021) report will present the first comprehensive global assessment of food insecurity in the year since the COVID-19 emerged around the world.

This year’s report, jointly produced by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) will present:

  • The first comprehensive assessment of the state of hunger and food insecurity for 2020 based on global data collected during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Projections on the number of undernourished people in 2030 accounting for the impact of COVID-19.
  • Updated estimates for several nutrition indicators and projections to 2030.
  • Updated estimates of the cost and affordability of a healthy diet.
  • Policy recommendations to transform agri-food systems and regain the upper hand in the fight against hunger.
